Green Products: Ecover Dishwashing Liquid

While I’m obviously a green cleaning products devotee, it’s rare that I find a particular product that works its way into my go-to, everyday arsenal of cleaning supplies. Ecover’s Lemon & Aloe Vera Dishwashing Liquid is one of those rare products. This lightly scented, highly effective dish soap has become one of our household’s favorite grime-busting solutions for hand-washing dishes, silverware, pots, and pans.

Ecover’s dish soap works extremely well to cut through everything from slick, greasy plates to crusted silverware to leave dishware sparkling clean—all by using primarily plant-based and mineral ingredients. The ingredient list includes water, anionic and non-ionic surfactants (sudsing agents), aloe vera, wheat proteins, citric acid, salt, plant-derived fragrance, and biodegradable preservative. This product gets an applause-worthy B+ rating from Environmental Working Group’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning.

With just a squirt on the sponge, this product sudses up nicely and cleans efficiently. It also works well to loosen caked-on food when left in warm water in a pan, pot, or baking dish that needs to be left soaking in the sink overnight.

It has a smooth feel, a pleasant lemon scent, and is infused with aloe vera which offers a soothing, softening factor. I live in a dry, high-elevation climate and can easily get dry, cracked dishpan hands if I’m hand-washing frequently—Ecover’s Lemon & Aloe Vera Dish Liquid helps alleviate this problem.

Ecover’s Lemon & Aloe Vera Dishwashing Liquid comes in two sizes, 16oz ($3.00) and 32oz ($5.95) and is available in most health food stores and green cleaning-focused online retailers. This product is also biodegradable, suitable for septic tanks and it’s not tested on animals.
