S.C. Johnson Talks Green

Beginning in late November, S.C. Johnson announced its plans to disclose all product ingredients. Beginning with commercials running during November’s Thanksgiving Day parade, the spots, which also appear on numerous websites, feature the company’s Chairman, Herbert Fisk Johnson III. As Johnson told The New York Times, the promise to disclose “all of our ingredients, right down to the fragrances and dyes,” is being presented as part of the “family company” campaign. S. C. Johnson initially made the promise in 2009 and is giving itself a deadline of 2012 to comply. The information is being phased in on labels and will also appear on the S. C. Johnson website (scjohnson.com).

The article also reported that last year, Method sponsored a campaign to encourage consumers to ask Congress to pass a proposed Household Product Labeling Act, which would require household cleaners to bear labels with accurate, complete lists of all ingredients.

In addition to S.C. Johnson, both Method and Seventh Generation were pointed out by The New York Times as stressing full disclosure of ingredients.
