Product Review: Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap

It simply doesn’t get more classically green and clean than Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap. A cornerstone product from this 66-year-old soap maker, Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap is a workhorse suds maker that can be used for everything from cleaning your home to shampooing your locks.

The backstory on the Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps company is fascinating. Founded by third generation certified master soapmaker (under the guild system of the time) Emanuel Bronner in 1948 in America, Dr. Bronner’s has its roots in Emanuel’s formulas for high-quality liquid and bar soaps, which he developed while living in his birthplace of Heilbronn, Germany.

Dr. Bronner’s Castile Liquid Soap is one of these formulas that became a much-loved sensation in the 1960s. Today, this powerhouse soap is just as effective—and natural—as in its early days.

What’s in Dr. Bronner’s Castile Liquid Soap? The ingredient list for the Lavender scent soap is fairly simple—and pure: Water, Organic Coconut Oil, Potassium Hydroxide (none remains after saponifying oils into soap and glycerin), Lavandin Extract, Organic Olive Oil*, Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Lavender Extract, Citric Acid, and Tocopherol.

The uses for this liquid soap are endless—so much so that this product has been called the “Swiss-army knife” of cleaning. It is gentle enough for washing body, face or hair, but also powerful enough for jobs like mopping floors, washing dishes, doing laundry, and even pest control. Different tasks call for different dilutions, which are outlined here.

We love the multipurpose focus of this natural soap. It is truly effective on a variety of surfaces (from skin to tile and more) plus it delivers surprising suds for a natural product.

Bonus: all soaps are certified organic under the USDA National Organic Program. They are also certified Fair Trade and packaged in 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic bottles.

Plus, we just love the Dr. Bronner’s mission. Today, the company continues its commitment to building an engine for promoting and advancing positive social change—from pioneering USDA certified organic personal care products to creating Fair Trade projects across the world. It’s clear that this heritage company honors its ages-old progressive business practices while also devoting profits to worthwhile causes and charities worldwide.
